In Pakistan, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8238916 BCX8\">Bangladesh<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8238916 BCX8\"> and India, for example, thousands of jobs in the shipyards <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8238916 BCX8\">and downstream service sectors depend on ship recycling. The steel recovered from <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW8238916 BCX8\">the ships<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8238916 BCX8\"> is an important raw material. In Bangladesh alone, around 80 percent of the country&#8217;s total raw material demand for steel is covered by the recycling yards. The pioneer of such a more sustainable recycling economy in the maritime industry in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW89125744 BCX8\">compliance with all important environmental and occupational safety measures is Germany. The content of the convent<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141491154 BCX8\">ion is an agreement for the worldwide improvement of environmentally sound recycling of ships and for the working conditions prevailing in the shipbreaking yards and operations. The Convention will apply to all new and existing seagoing ships of 500 gross <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW141491154 BCX8\">tonnage and above.<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW204473372 BCX8\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW204473372 BCX8\">The two core components of the Convention are:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW204473372 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span class=\"TextRun SCXW173341888 BCX8\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW173341888 BCX8\">an inventory of hazardous materials for each ship, in which all hazardous materials must be recorded in detail, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW173341888 BCX8\">indicating<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW173341888 BCX8\"> their location and approximate quantity, and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW173341888 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW24624402 BCX8\">certification of the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW24624402 BCX8\"> recycling yards; because seagoing ships may only be dismantled at certified yards that <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW24624402 BCX8\">comply with<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW24624402 BCX8\"> all the environmental and safety requirements of the Convention.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW19477638 BCX8\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW19477638 BCX8\">However, the Hong Kong Convention has not yet entered into force, as not enough member stat<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW19477638 BCX8\">es have acceded to the agreement. This is because the EU Ship Recycling Regulation has already entered into force. The directive regulates the dismantling of ships,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW215037694 BCX8\"> which in future may only take place at certified <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW215037694 BCX8\">and, above all, listed<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW215037694 BCX8\"> shipyards according to firmly regulated procedures, with the aim of reducing accidents and risks and thus avoiding injury and damage to the environment.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW215037694 BCX8\"
